New to Wearing Makeup? Here Are Some Tips You Can Try

Growing up, many of us saw our moms applying makeup in front of the mirror and wondered what we would look like once we were old enough to wear it. By the time we’re teens, when many of us begin to experiment with makeup, we have to learn what products we like, how to apply them, and when to wear them.

Living in this digital age, we’re so used to seeing retouched images and filters, especially in social media posts, that it might seem like makeup is only ever used to cover up imperfections. You should know that makeup doesn’t have to be used to completely change the way you look. Makeup is all about enhancing your features, but most of all, makeup should make you feel good in the skin you’re in. A little makeup can give you that extra boost of self-confidence, but you should know that you’re beautiful wether you wear makeup or not.

If you’re recently learning how to use makeup, we’ve got you covered with some tips and product recommendations that should make your makeup routine a little easier. After all, wearing the right makeup should help you feel empowered and should definitely not be a chore!

You don’t need a ten-step routine with anti-aging products yet. A simple skincare routine can give your skin the extra nourishment it needs. All you need is cleanser, moisturizer and toner. Use a cleanser to help get rid of oils and any excess dirt on your face. If you wear makeup during the day, double cleansing at night is the best method to ensure all the makeup is gone.

Try a gentle toner to exfoliate the skin like Pixi’s cult classic Glow Tonic. It’s super gentle and leaves your face feeling smooth. Finish off with a moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. The Ordinary’s Squalane Cleanser and Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA are affordable and get the job done. The Squalane Cleanser is super moisturizing while the Natural Moisturizing Factors is great for all skin types.

You don’t have to wear a foundation unless you want more coverage. If you want something with full coverage, you can’t go wrong with Milani’s Conceal + Perfect 2-In-1 Foundation + Concealer. It lasts all day long and performs just as good if not better than a high-end foundation. If you want something to simply even out your skin tone, then go for Revlon’s Colorstay Light Cover Liquid Foundation. It will give you that no-makeup makeup look with an extra SPF 30.

If you don’t want to use foundation, you can use concealer to cover any redness or spots. Maybelline has some of the best concealers at the drugstore. My favourites are Maybelline’s New York Super Stay Better Skin Concealer + Corrector and Fit Me Concealer. Both have great coverage and are long lasting.

If you get oily or have an oily t-zone, then you can use Maybelline’s Fit Me Loose Finishing Powder to set your makeup. If you are extremely oily, you can leave the powder on for a few minutes in the areas you get the oiliest. If not, you can lightly dust your face and your makeup stays in place.

You’ll want to warm up your skin after you’ve applied your foundation and concealer. The best bronzer at the drugstore is Physicians Formula’s Murumuru Butter Bronzer. It has a hydrating formula and a creamy texture that blends in instantly.

To add colour to your face, use some blush. Milani’s Baked Blush looks gorgeous on the skin. You can build up the color to your liking, and it will give your skin a beautiful radiant finish. If you like a cream blush, e.l.f just released their Putty Blush. Made with argan oil and vitamin E, these blushes have a creamy formula that has a semi-powder finish. A little goes a long way.

If you like a glow, then you can’t go wrong with Maybelline’s Facestudio Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter. It’s  If you like a cream highlight, try NYX’s Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator. A liquid illuminator is great to put on during your no-makeup days or to mix with your foundation.

NYX sells good quality affordable lip products. My favourite NYX lip products are their Slim Lip Pencils and their Butter Glosses. Their lip liners are long-lasting, and if you’re a gloss girl, you will love their butter glosses. They leave your lips looking super shiny.

Setting Spray

Milani’s Make it Last Setting Spray has a nice spritzer and helps lock in your makeup. Adding a setting spray helps mesh all the powder together and makes everything look seamless.

I’ve found that your face can look unfinished if you have foundation and concealer on and you don’t have anything on your eyebrows. You can skip this step depending on how thick your eyebrows are. A good eyebrow pencil at the drugstore is e.l.f.’s Ultra Precise Brow. It has an ultra-fine tip and a creamy formula. Most importantly, it has a brush on the other end to help blend the product.

NYX’s Epic Ink Liner is one of my favourite eyeliners of all time. It has a felt tip that is easier to use than other applicators, and the colour doesn’t smudge off my oily eyelids. Eyeliner takes some practice to master, so don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t come out looking good the first time.

After Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara went viral on Tik Tok, I knew I had to try it. This mascara will make a huge difference for your lashes no matter how long they are. It’s crazy how lengthening and volumizing this mascara is.

We hope this guide helps you when shopping for makeup and learning how to use it. Remember, makeup isn’t supposed to be used as a tool to completely transform how you look. Makeup definitely does have the ability to make you feel good, but it should be used to enhance your features. As you play with different techniques, remember to always clean your makeup off before bed. Trust me, your skin—and your pillow—will thank you.
